Which Tiebreakers Are Used to Break Ties in the WNBA?
WNBA Tiebreaking System
The WNBA uses a series of tiebreakers to determine playoff seeding and home-court advantage in the event of a tie between two or more teams. The tiebreakers are applied in the following order:- Better record in head-to-head games
- Better winning percentage against all teams with a .500 or better record
- Better point differential in head-to-head games
- Better point differential against all teams with a .500 or better record
- Coin flip
Head-to-Head Record
The first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record between the two teams. If the teams have played an even number of games, the team with the best record in those games wins the tiebreaker. If the teams have played an odd number of games, the team with the best winning percentage in those games wins the tiebreaker.Winning Percentage
If the teams have not played each other or if they have an equal head-to-head record, the next tiebreaker is the winning percentage against all teams with a .500 or better record. The team with the best winning percentage against these teams wins the tiebreaker. For example, if Team A is 20-10 against teams with a .500 or better record and Team B is 15-15 against teams with a .500 or better record, Team A would win the tiebreaker.
Point Differential
If the teams have an equal winning percentage against teams with a .500 or better record, the next tiebreaker is the point differential in head-to-head games. The team with the better point differential in head-to-head games wins the tiebreaker. For example, if Team A has a point differential of +10 in head-to-head games against Team B, and Team B has a point differential of -5 in head-to-head games against Team A, Team A would win the tiebreaker.
